Inside Cape Town's most luxurious hotel

A deluxe superior suite at the Silo Hotel, featuring 5.5-metre-high domed windows. The striking exterior of the hotel (and the exterior and interior spaces of the adjoining museum) was designed by Thomas Heatherwick, of London-based Heatherwick Studio. The opulent, eclectic interiors of the hotel are the work of co-owner Liz Biden; each individually decorated room features contemporary African art.

The Silo Hotel occupies six floors of the elevator structure of a former grainery – the windowless floors beneath the guest rooms form part of the adjoining museum’s gallery space.

Light fills the Silo’s Willaston Bar, which serves up intriguing cocktails such as the Kalahari Safari (featuring Kalahari truffle-infused gin and rooibos syrup).

The spectacular view from the rooftop pool is a panorama encompassing the iconic Table Mountain and Lion’s Head, the city centre and even Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for all those years. There’s a rooftop bar as well: it’s open until sunset daily.

Behind the elevator building housing the hotel, 42 grain silos have been carved out to create the galleries of Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa. Zeitz MOCAA is dedicated to 21st-century African art and art from the African diaspora around the world. Ghanaian sculptor El Anatsui’s installation Tsiatsia – searching for connection (2013) hangs in the cathedral-like atrium of the museum until December 2019.

Once you’ve explored Zeitz MOCAA and the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, check out the beachside shopping and dining strip of Victoria Road in the affluent suburb of Camps Bay, below Table Mountain.

At the seafood restaurant Paranga, which looks out to Camps Bay Beach from the Victoria Road promenade.

Banquettes at the Shortmarket Club, which offers ‘relaxed fine dining’ in central Cape Town. This is innovative chef Luke Dale-Roberts’s most recent venture in the city, following Test Kitchen (his first, and most awarded, restaurant), the Pot Luck Club and Salsify at the Roundhouse in Camps Bay.
