WWE Battleground 2016 Results
WWE Battleground 2016 is the first pay-per-view after the company’s brand split and roster draft to RAW and SmackDown. The event airs live from Washington, D.C at the Verizon Center.
Battleground Kickoff Show:
– Tyler Breeze & Fandango def. The Usos: The Usos use double-team offense on Fandango early on. After a series of superkicks, The Usos go for a Doomsday Device on Fandango but Breeze breaks it up. Breeze misses a splash to the outside and Jey hits a superkick that sends Fandango to the outside. Jimmy hit a suicide dive on Fandango to the outside, while back in the ring Breeze gets his knees up to block a Samoan Splash from Jey. Breeze rolls Jey over for the pin and gets the win for Breezedango.
– We get a video highlighting the history between Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns. Battleground is up next!
Battleground 2016:
– Sasha Banks & Bayley def. Charlotte & Dana Brooke: Bayley makes her WWE main roster debut as Sasha’s mystery opponent for tonight’s match. Charlotte and Dana jump Sasha and Bayley before the bell, and Charlotte and Bayley start things off. Sasha gets the tag after a couple minutes and hits a flying headscissors off the top rope on Charlotte. Dana and Bayley get the tags and Bayley clears the ring. Dana takes control of the match following a distraction from Charlotte. Following a double clothesline, Sasha and Charlotte get the tags and Sasha hits a splash off the top for a 2 count. Charlotte comes back with the Natural Selection but Bayley makes the save. Dana and Bayley fight on the floor, while Sasha hits the backstabber and the Banks Statement in the ring for the win.
– The Wyatt Family def. The New Day: Before the match, The New Day cuts a promo about how the draft split up the Wyatt Family. Xavier and Bray go to start things off, but Kofi sees Xavier is freezing up so he tags himself in and Bray tags in Strowman. Strowman goes to work on Kofi then tags in Rowan who stays on the offense. Bray comes in and hits a powerslam and a running Senton on Kofi for 2. Kofi hits a boot to the face on Bray, then Big E and Rowan get the tags. Big E hits a suplex and a splash, followed up by another belly-to-belly overhead suplex. After a run-in by Strowman, the Wyatts briefly take control. Kofi misses a Trouble In Paradise on BRay and Bray goes for the Sister Abigail, but Xavier makes the save. Xavier and Bray stare each other down until Kofi comes in. Bray hits the Sister Abigail on Kofi while Xavier does nothing, but then Xavier “snaps out of it” and unleashes offense on Bray. Xavier hits a splash off the top on Bray and superkicks Rowan to the outside. Strowman grabs Xavier by the throat, but Big E spears him to the floor. Xavier turns around and Bray hits him with the Sister Abigail for the win.
– Rusev def. Zack Ryder: Rusev’s U.S. Title is on the line in this one. Ryder gets in some offense inside and outside the ring early on, but Rusev slows things down after a kick to the back of Ryder’s head. Ryder comes back with a flying knee and a series of forearm shots on the U.S. Champion. Ryder hits the Broski Boot on Rusev for a 1 count, then Rusev rolls to the outside. At ringside, Ryder stands on top of the fan barricade and hit a missile dropkick on Rusev and both men are down. Back in the ring, Ryder hits the Ruff Ryder but misses the follow-up elbow off the top. Rusev hits a big boot to the back of the head then locks Ryder in the Accolade. Ryder breaks the hold briefly, but Rusev gets him back in it for the win. Mojo Rawley hits the ring for the save after the match and Rusev retreats up the ramp.
– Rollins has words with Mick Foley and Stephanie McMahon in the back. Rollins says in 9 months, don’t be surprised if there is a boom of babies named “Rollins.”
– Sami Zayn def. Kevin Owens: The match starts with the two men brawling all over the ringside area. Back in teh ring, Sami hits a spinning heel kick on Owens for a 1 count. Zayn goes up top but Owens crotches him on the ropes then follows up with a cannonball and a headbutt for a 2 count. Owens hits a series of stiff kicks and a running Senton splash for another 2. Owens goes to powerbomb Zayn on the floor at ringside, but Zayn grabs the ropes and hits a moonsault on Owens. Zayn didn’t hit it perfectly and may have hurt his shoulder hitting the ring apron on the way down. Back in the ring, Sami hits the Blue Thunder Bomb for 2. Sami hits a brainbuster on Owens on the ring apron, but sells a shoulder injury on the floor after. Back in the ring, they trade right hands until Sami gets the upper hand and Owens rolls to the outside. Zayn looks to do his signature tornado DDT through the ropes, but Owens meets him with a superkick and follows up with a cannonball. Owens hits the frogsplash off the top for a near-fall. Sami gets out of the Pop-Up Powerbomb twice and hits two t-bone suplexes for a 2 count. Owens is finally able to hit the Pop-Up Powerbomb but Zayn gets his foot on the bottom rope at 2. They trade some stiff slaps before Zayn hits two more t-bone suplexes followed up by a big boot in the corner. He sets up Owens in the corner again and hits another big boot for the win.
– Natalya def. Becky Lynch: Becky starts off in control with a series of suplexes then takes the action to the outside. Becky slips into the ring apron and Natalya takes advantage and starts working the left knee of Becky. Natalya continues working on the leg of Becky until Becky mounts a comeback with some clotheslines. Becky hits a t-bone suplex for a near-fall. Natalya escapes the Dis-arm-her and gets Becky in the Sharpshooter but Becky reaches the ropes. Becky hits a missile dropkick off the top for 2, but Natalya comes back with another Sharpshooter in the middle of the ring and this time Becky taps out.
– Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan are in the back giving a pep talk to Dean Ambrose about his match tonight.
– The Miz vs. Darren Young – No Contest: The Miz’s IC Title is on the line in this one. Back and forth action between Young and Miz in the opening moments, with Young getting the occasional coaching from Bob Backlund in the corner. The Miz takes control and slows the pace down, but Young comes back with a big clothesline. The Miz gets out of a Crossface Chicken Wing attempt and goes to leave the match, but Backlund blocks the ramp. Maryse slaps Backlund across the face at ringside which sends Backlund into a rage and The Miz comes out and shoves him. Darren Young comes out and locks Miz in the Chicken Wing at ringside, and the referee calls for the bell.
– John Cena, Enzo & Cass def. The Club: Enzo cuts a promo before the match about how they’re going to beat The Club. Enzo and and AJ start things off trading holds until AJ hits a dropkick that levels Enzo. Enzo tags in Big Cass and AJ tags in Anderson and the two start brawling. Gallows runs in and Enzo runs in and takes him out, then Big Cass throws Enzo to the outside ontop of Gallows and Anderson on the floor. Back in the ring, Cass tags in Enzo then powerslams him onto Anderson for a 2 count. Anderson comes back with a right hand and tags in Gallows, who beats down Enzo in the corner before hitting a Jackhammer for 2. The Club trades tags and continues the beat down on Enzo as the story of the match is the heels keeping Enzo from getting the hot tag. Enzo finally gets the tag on Cena who is fresh. Cena goes to work on AJ and hits the Five Knuckle Shuffle. He goes for the Attitude Adjustment, but AJ gets out and hits the Pele kick. AJ goes for the Styles Clash, but Enzo runs in with a tornado DDT. This clears the aprons, with Cass laying out Anderson and Gallows laying out Cass. AJ accidentally hits Gallows with the Phenomenal Forearm in the commotion, which allows Cena to hit the AA on AJ. Anderson pulls Cena out of the ring to break the pin, and gives Cena a spinebuster onto the announce table. Enzo shuts down Anderson with a tornado DDT on the floor. AJ hits the Styles Clash on Cena, but Cass breaks the pin then lays out AJ with a big boot. Back in the ring, Gallows and Anderson hit the Magic Killer on Cass. Enzo takes Anderson to the outside, and Cena throws Gallows to the outside. Cena and AJ climb the turnbuckle, and Cena hits the Attitude Adjustment off the middle rope to AJ for the win.
– Jericho comes out in a vest and a scarf to host The Highlight Reel with his guest Randy Orton. Orton comes out and talks about being out of action for 9 months and missing the fans. Orton says he’s disappointed that he has to share the ring with Jericho on his night back, and Jericho says Orton should be thanking him for letting him on the Highlight Reel. Jericho tells Orton he’s on SmackDown, while Jericho is on RAW with Stephanie McMahon who he says is one of his favorite people since he first came to WWE. Jericho says he has a gift for Orton to help him against Brock Lesnar: The gift of Jericho, drink it in man. Jericho says Orton is scared of Lesnar. Orton says it only takes one RKO to go to Viperville, “no enhancement needed,” in reference to Brock’s failed UFC drug test. Jericho says he has a message from Brock to relay, that Orton is a stupid idiot, “Brock’s words, not mine.” Jericho goes to turn around and leave but Orton drops him with an RKO to close out the segment.
– Dean Ambrose def. Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins: Ambrose’s Wold Heavyweight Title is on the line in this one. Shane McMahon, Daniel Bryan, Stephanie McMahon, and Mick Foley are all at ringside for this one. Reigns starts things off with some offense against Rollins, then Ambrose rolls up Reigns quickly from behind for a 2 count. Reigns and Ambrose go back and forth until Rollins comes back in the ring and lays them both out. Rollins comes off the top but Reigns catches him and drops him with a Samoan Drop, then Reigns and Ambrose go back to brawling. Rollins throws Reigns to the outside and goes to work on Ambrose in the corner. Reigns pulls Rollins to the outside and Rollins comes off the top rope onto Reigns. Rollins comes off the apron with a knee to the face of Ambrose. Rollins throws Reigns and Ambrose around ringside until Reigns backdrops him into the timekeepers area. Ambrose comes off the announce table and splashes onto both of his opponents on the floor. Back in the ring, Ambrose hits a top rope elbow on Reigns for 2, then Rollins hits a top rope splash on Ambrose for 2. Reigns lays out both opponents with clotheslines and powerslams to take control of the match, then hits the Superman punch on both of them. Reigns hits a second Superman punch on Rollins then gets clotheslined down by Ambrose. Ambrose and Rollins double team Reigns which pops the crowd. Ambrose throws Reigns outside and hits a suicide dive, then Rollins follows with another onto Reigns. Rollins and Ambrose clear the Spanish announce table and team up to powerbomb Reigns through the table. After the table spot, Rollins his them both with a steel chair. Back in the ring, Ambrose reverses a powerslam from Rollins into a hurricanrana into the turnbuckle. Rollins hits a superplex off the top and rolls into a Falcon Arrow for a near-fall on Ambrose. Reigns gets back in the ring and powerbombs both opponents. Reigns Superman punches Ambrose to the outside, then Rollins hits a Pedigree on Reigns for 2. Reigns comes back with a Superman punch and a spear, but before he can make the pin, Ambrose runs in and hit sthe Dirty Deeds on Reigns for the win. Still WWE Champion: Dean Ambrose!
