Wright queries Man Utd over ‘strange’ Cavani signing

Ian Wright thinks Man Utd made a “strange” decision to sign Edinson Cavani this summer when they should’ve bought Erling Haaland or Jadon Sancho.

Cavani has made an impact off the bench for the Red Devils in recent weeks, scoring a brace in their 3-2 comeback victory over Southampton at the weekend.

Borussia Dortmund winger Sancho was heavily linked with a move to Man Utd in the summer, while Haaland was also linked before his move to the Bundesliga giants.

Man Utd brought in Cavani on a free on deadline day and Wright thinks the Red Devils just continue to plug gaps rather than investing in long-term additions.

“When you look back, you can go as far back as Henrik Larsson, they bring in that kind of maverick forward just to kind of plug gaps,” the former Arsenal striker told the Kelly & Wrighty Show.

“You’ve got Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Radamel Falcao, now they’ve got Ighalo even and Cavani. When are they going to get it? Because they’ve got Cavani, but why didn’t they get Erling Haaland? Or Jadon Sancho?

“It’s just strange what they settle for, for the club that they are, [compared to] what they should be getting. It’s really strange.”

Cavani was impressive off the bench against Southampton and Solskjaer was full of praise for the Uruguayan after the match.

He said: “He is a number nine who wants to be in between the posts, he is always on the move, he wants to get in front of you and I am very pleased with him.

“On the training pitch, in the dressing room and during meal times, how meticulous he is. He knows what he wants to eat, how much he wants to recover – everything!

“It was top movement and his timing is fantastic. His hunger to get on the end of things is the key for a centre-forward. Sometimes it hurts and sometimes it doesn’t but to score you have to be in there.”
