Virgo season: the traits and characteristics that define the star sign
Versatile Virgo, you’re the all-round multi-tasker of the zodiac, with high standards that other signs can only dream of reaching. If you want a job done properly, call in a Virgo. Precise, perfectionist and maybe a little pedantic, this practical and hands-on sign is known for being conscientious. In an astrological chart Virgo rules the sixth house, which is dedicated to service, daily work and wellbeing routines, the areas of life that may not be glamorous but they’re the power house of existence and without them nothing would ever get done.
If you’re Virgo you’re a complex creature in that you have your feet on the ground as a reliable Earth sign (the other Earth signs are Taurus and Capricorn), while your ruling planet is head-in-the-clouds Mercury. Unlike Gemini, an Air sign that’s also ruled by Mercury and often has ingenious ideas but scattered thinking, Mercury makes you the zodiac’s chief librarian, just as much a font of knowledge as Gemini but in your case it’s usually orderly, alphabetised and easily accessible. No wonder you’re often called upon as the go-to gal to sort out other people’s problems, both practical and personal.
Such is your legendary skill and reputation as a problem solver that you often send out subliminal signals that attract people who need your help. Often you draw in artists, poets, musicians and creative types who crave the benefit of your sensible down to earth-ness and Marie Kondo-esque skills to cut out the clutter and get on with projects rather than procrastinate or simply daydream about success. But you also tend to draw in users, losers and delusional drop outs who plug into your personal power knowing that you’ll be able to fix them. While you certainly love a fixer-upper – renovating dilapidated properties and selling them for profit could be a dream occupation for you – beware of the energy vampires who are all take and no give. In love you may find you ‘sort out’ a partner who has lots of potential but who lacks drive, and after you’ve ‘mended’ them and worked on their issues they say ‘adios’ and move on, repaired and ready for someone other than you.
It’s a blessing and a curse, then, that you love to be of service to others. You thrive on it. You’re the one at work who knows the special ways everyone has their coffee, who tidies up after the after party, and even if you’re the CEO of your own company you’ll be running around after others, making sure they’re okay before you get your own work done. At times you may grumble about always being the one who gets landed with these chores, but if you’re honest, deep down inside you know that a little part of you loves the martyrdom of it, as well as the satisfaction of knowing that you’ll probably do the job better than anyone else anyway! While you do love to micro-manage, remember that you’re not everyone’s servant so aim to let others do at least some of the heavy lifting at work (and elsewhere) while you focus on the other stuff you excel at.
And you do excel at a lot of stuff. While you have a huge grasp on most areas, with an amazing ability to know a little about a lot, your specialist subjects are most likely to include anything that’s hands-on and healthy, and your bookshelves and podcasts are bound to cover all sorts of alternative therapies, yoga, healthy living, cooking and eating, as you love to dabble and explore new ways to keep your mind, body and soul in perfect working order.
You care about the environment too and whether your personal style is power dressing or dungarees and dreads, you’re an eco warrior, doing your best to save the planet one recycled soya yoghurt pot or rescued and rehomed kitten at a time.

While you’re often content to work solo, you thrive in groups of like-minded others, though they do have to be totally on your wavelength for communal activities to succeed. Because you’re so hands-on, situations where you can combine a useful activity with productive chatter suit you best. Think: a knit and natter group, a beach clean team, a dog-walking posse. Women’s groups and eco issues in particular may also be right up your street. Virgo rules ‘wise women’ who back in the day would have grown and used herbs and spices for health, so your allotment association get-togethers over organic veggies could be seen as the modern day equivalent of a coven.
For true job satisfaction, use your talents and interests and apply them to a career. Virgo often produces excellent care givers, so you might consider working in a medical environment, especially with alternative therapies, and potentially with animals as you often have an affinity with all creatures furred, feathered or fishy. You’re also more likely than most other signs to follow a plant-based diet as a result of your deep concern and connection with all living things, so working as a vegan chef could also appeal. You’re a trend-spotter, a fabulous researcher and excellent with admin and organisation. Your sign has the potential to make you a superb fitness instructor and you’re also good with your hands so turning a pleasure into a profit-making business could see you as an artisan baker, a potter or a weaver. Since you love to learn, you could also be a fabulous teacher as your ability to impart knowledge, skills and wisdom is second to none.
Whatever role you decide upon, you’ll give it your all – and then some. Virgo is said to be a hard taskmaster, a seeker of perfection, and not afraid to criticise if things don’t come up to your high expectations. While you certainly expect high standards from others, you’re often harder still on yourself, pushing yourself beyond reasonable limits and sometimes even beyond healthy boundaries. It’s possible for your sign to take work regimes and diets or health goals to extremes. Aim to be as kind to yourself and your body as you would be to other people you care about.
And when it comes to caring, in love you’re more practical than poetic. You might prefer to receive a gift of a bag of organic fertiliser to grow your own veggies rather than anything too soppy or sentimental, though a rustic handmade piece of jewellery would hit the right romantic note with you.
Between the sheets, because you love to learn and experiment, you have stamina galore and an endless curiosity about the body and how to pleasure yourself and others. Working your way through the many moves in the Kama Sutra is a sure-fire way to turn on your mind and your body! The only caveat with you is that the sheets must be fresh and the post make-out shower has to be powerful, with plenty of crisp, clean towels and luscious organic bath products because you are the Queen of Hygiene and a clean freak par excellence!
