Villa make Saints left-back their third biggest signing ever
Aston Villa have signed defender Matt Targett from Southampton, the Premier League clubs have announced.
The 23-year-old joins promoted Villa for an undisclosed fee, reported to be around £14m, after making 63 appearances for his boyhood club.
Villa head coach Dean Smith told the club’s website: “We’re very pleased to have Matt join us.
“He’s a player we have been looking at for a considerable amount of time.
“He fits our criteria of being a young player with experience of playing in the Premier League and having the potential to develop further.
“He will help make us a stronger defensive unit and we are all looking forward to working with him.”
The left-back, now one of the most expensive uncapped Englishmen of all-time, praised a club that is “on the up, definitely”.
“Dean, the gaffer, is building something special here,” he added.
“I have spoken to him and I’m really excited to join the club, work with him and help him in his plans to move this club as forward as it can go.
“The gaffer likes to play good football, exciting, attacking football and that’s a really good fit for me. It’s perfect for me.”
