Two England strikers in line to replace Kane at Spurs
Tottenham have a contingency plan for Harry Kane’s potential exit this summer that involves to England international strikers.
According to The Sun, Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and Southampton’s Danny Ings are possible targets if Kane leaves for either Manchester United or Manchester City this summer.
Watkins scored 14 Premier League goals in his first season and also scored on his England debut against San Marino, earning him a place in Gareth Southgate’s initial England squad for Euro 2020.
Ings had an injury-plagued season yet still scored 12 goals, but he might need a transfer away from Southampton after losing his England place.
No top-four players in top 10 strikers of the season
Tottenham‘s first-choice plan is for Kane to stay at Tottenham for at least another season, and they hope their pursuit of former coach Mauricio Pochettino might convince him to stay.
They claim that Tottenham ‘want to start official talks with Paris Saint-Germain on Monday about bringing Pochettino back to North London’.
Watkins opted to join Aston Villa over Tottenham last summer as he wanted to play first-team football. Having moved from Brentford for £30m, he would surely cost double that price were Spurs to pursue him this summer.
Ings would be a cheaper option as he will be 29 this summer and he has just one year remaining on his contract.
“I don’t think he starts at Man United,”said Carlton Palmer this week. “He doesn’t start at Man United. He may start at Spurs if [Harry] Kane goes.
“But I worry about Danny. For me, he misses a lot of football games through injuries. He scores goals and, you know, that’s a fact.
“But the type of money that he’s going to want, you need to be more convinced that he’s going to be on the football pitch a lot longer than what he is.”
Meanwhile, former Leeds striker Noel Whelan has claimed that Watkins does not deserve his England place over Patrick Bamford.
“I mean, he [Bamford] must really be pulling his hair out because he is now in his prime as a striker, as a player between 26 and 30, that is when you are playing your best football”, Whelan said on BBC Radio Leeds.
“I have got to say, look he has done a lot more than Ollie Watkins.”
