Turkish clubs still puzzled: 2+1 or 3 foreigners?

How many foreigners will be allowed to play and sit on bench in Turkish league next season? That has been in question since April.

Right after finish of 2010-2011 season, president of the Turkish Volleyball Federation Erol Ünal Karabıyık has announced the change of the foreign players limit in Turkish league from 3 to 2+1 for the upcoming season. After four years with 3+1 and 3 rule, his decision surprised many. Since then, meetings, discussions and disputes inside of the Turkish Volleyball Federation (TVF) and between TVF and clubs never ended.

 

The reason of this change is development of Turkish volleyball. “We want to give our players bigger chance to play in their clubs and develop better quality and experience for our national team. If there is at least 1% chance of qualifying for the Olympic games I would like to continue with 2+1 rule,” Karabıyık said.

However, many coaches and experts, like Arkas coach Glenn Hoag claim that there cannot be any improvement of young Turkish players if their clubs will not buy high level foreigners and thus play the top European competitions with them.

 

Mainly clubs with ambitions towards European cups – Arkas Izmir, Fenerbahce men´s and women´s teams or Vakifbank Istanbul – who already transferred more then 3 foreign players, showed their disappointment and put pressure on TVF.

 

„This decision will bring nothing but harm to Turkish volleyball,“ said Fenerbahce volleyball department manager Hakan Dinçay. „Generally, there are not enough good hitters and diagonals in Turkey. We were not content even with the 3 players limitation. With 2+1, our chance for success in Europe is getting to minimum.“

 

During many meetings and negotiations, clubs tried to change Karabıyık´s mind and propose different solutions. President even planned to resign in May, but then changed his mind and now strictly defends the new rule.
