Award-winning American fashion designer, beauty entrepreneur and filmmaker, Tom Ford, has already well and truly conquered our wardrobes and make-up kits by way of his namesake fashion label, Tom Ford, his beauty brand, Tom Ford Beauty, and through his pivotal tenures at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent.
But until now, how we looked after our skin was up to the host of other skincare brands on the market. Tom Ford left that part of the equation up to others.
However, it was only a matter of time before Ford extended his empire into the realm of skincare. And that time has come. Tom Ford has announced the launch of a luxury new scientific skincare range called Tom Ford Research.
The designer and beauty entrepreneur shared the details of the new skincare line on both the Tom Ford Instagram account and the Tom Ford Beauty account. On @tomford, the designer posted a picture of himself in a clinical-yet-chic Tom Ford-branded lab coat in the lab testing out products with two other similarly lab coat-clad people (presumably scientists). Ford captioned the post: “Working closing with a team of scientists, using new research, I have developed high potency formulations that work.” The caption hashtags the skincare range, Tom Ford Research.
Over on @tomfordbeauty, the two-product range has been revealed to include Serum Concentrate and Crème Concentrate, which according to the caption feature “White Porcelain Cacao, Caffeine and Gyokuru”. The caption also notes the products are available now from TomFord.com (which currently only ships within the US) and details their retail prices: US$350 (approximately AU$516) for the Serum Concentrate and US$450 (approximately AU$664) for the Crème Concentrate.
In an interview with US about Tom Ford Research, the designer reportedly divulged that his interest in skincare started when he was a teenager after he saw a talk-show host “discuss his collagen injections on air”. But the designer didn’t want to rush into the business of skincare, which is why it’s taken until now for him to venture into the space.
“I’m not impressed by the creams and serums on the luxury market,” Ford told US , “so I thought, ‘why can’t someone combine a prescription-level product with a delivery system of a luxury one?’”
Ford also shared that a beauty trick he learnt from a dermatologist to reduce the puffiness around his eyes using wet tea bags was the initial basis for exploration into a science-backed skincare range. The designer asked the scientists at Estée Lauder — the company who makes Tom Ford Beauty — to research the science behind the puffiness-reducing effect of the tea bags. Fast forward to 2019, that research on “caffeine-focused skincare formulations” has been published with the American Academy of Dermatology and Tom Ford’s two-piece skincare edit featuring “pure caffeine” has launched.
No details as yet on when or if Tom Ford Research will be available in Australia, but check back here, we’ll update this story with any further news.
