Choosing a single nail colour can sometimes prove to be a daunting task. So much pressure is put on one shade to carry us through to our next appointment—matching every outfit, and suiting every mood along the way.
Thankfully, we’ve found the antidote to all your polish picking anxieties. This season’s latest nail trend, the skittle manicure, opens up once-restrictive manicure norms to let you to select multiple colours of polish; wearing a different one on each nail, ultimately emulating the vibrant candy. Perfect for both the commitment phobic and spontaneous among us.
This is just one of many recent shifts towards fun and upbeat manicures, with model Kendall Jenner sporting a technicolour-coated hand which included the bold shades of neon green, electric blue and safety orange. And we can file this look along with a stockpile of other multi-hued favourites, with many other celebrities now flirting with nail colour, patterns and length.
Another plus is that this look is also easy to DIY, and is suited to natural, acrylic and gel nails alike. And if more inspiration is what you’re after, there is a hoard of manicure snaps on Instagram waiting to be mined. In fact, a number of users have already uploaded their own manicures to the Instagram, driving the eclectic trend’s popularity and widening the possibilities for your personal colour palette of choice.
Would you opt for a mix of bold primary tones? Or are you more about pastel hues reminiscent of tropical sunsets and summer fruit? When it comes to skittle manicures, it’s very much a ‘choose your own adventure’ kind of scenario.
One of our favourite examples of the confectionery-inspired manicure was posted by LA-based blogger Courtney Trop, who has adopted the trend and presented it in moody burgundy, scarlet and ice blue colour palette, a look perfect for winter.
Or, if you’re after cool tones, may we suggest her other iteration which contains opalescent shades of lemon, lime green, pale pink and powder blue? If a crosscut of colours isn’t for you, there are always more minimal reimaginings of the trend on offer. A leader of the the skittle manicure, seasoned creative manicure expert, Betina Goldstein, shows a set that is a truer imitation of the Skittles colours we all know and love.
With the warmer seasons of spring and summer slowly encroaching, this is definitely a trend we can see ourselves getting on board with. Whatever side of the rainbow you lean towards, this manicure trend will allow you to haggle with hues in any which way you’d like – 10 nails at a time.
