These are the best vintage celebrity red carpet looks ever
As we near the end of the 2010s, the time is now to reflect on the state of fashion (highs, lows, risks and faux pas) and there’s no better place to consult than the red carpet.
The affairs that unfold on red carpets the world over have long held our attentions. The Oscars, the Met Gala, the Golden Globes—all are the culmination of fashion heaven, where the most impactful dresses from haute couture and ready-to-wear (the chosen ones!) come to life on the entertainment industry’s elite.
Think about it: the stylist’s vision for their clients; the rapport between actresses, actors and designers; the collaborations between make-up, nail and hair artists all come together in one spectacular ensemble—that serves as proof of weeks, even months, of hard work.
And, while audiences tune in excitedly to monitor which new wares have captivated editors and stylists most, and which celebrities to keep a watchful eye on, a clear resurgence in vintage clothing has picked up in recent years. Hello, slip dresses a la Kate Moss and minimalist silhouettes immortalised by Calvin Klein-wearing Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.
Today, the Bella Hadids and Kendall Jenners of our generation, whose stylists have piqued our interests in throwback dressing once more, have helped vintage to reclaim its cool status again. But besides their enviable street style, an increasingly eco-conscious industry and consumer have woken up to the alarming consequences of clothing production, meaning looking good is no longer sufficient grounds for feeling good in one’s fashion.
Which is why there’s no better time to reflect on the best moments in red carpet history, where our favourite celebrities sported something vintage for the evening. Below, Vogue mined the most star-studded red carpets around the globe for the best gowns that got a second wind.
