The best street style from New Zealand Fashion Week 2019
Certain cities spring to mind at the mention of fashion week: New York, London, Milan and Paris – these are the usual suspects. But no more.
Fast-forward to today’s digital climate and the explosion of e-commerce and an increasingly glocal world has given way to an international fashion week circuit that covers every far-flung corner of the world, from Tbilisi to Berlin. And New Zealand is no exception.
Rather, in step with industry shifts towards sustainability-first mindsets and rental retail models, New Zealand-born brands make up many of the vanguard designers leading an eco-change in fashion and a renewed emphasis on supporting local industry and production.
From August 26 to September 1, these designers will come together as the style set descend on the city of Auckland to take in the best that New Zealand Fashion Week has to offer.
From storied designers like Kate Sylvester and Zambesi (the brand celebrates its 40th birthday this year) to promising young talents Maggie Marilyn and Paris Georgia (beloved by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley no less), who will all show this week, the schedule is set to showcase a stellar line up of local collections that will no doubt make their way onto the likes of Moda Operandi and Net-a-Porter come time for the models to walk in their finale.
And, while the trends of the upcoming season are undoubtedly set on the runway, the off-duty style we will covet year-round and set out to emulate is solidified on the streets. The proof is in these pictures.
