Target's 'Minnesota Badgers' Baby Onesie Inspires More Creativity
MINNEAPOLIS — You may have heard about the now-infamous “Minnesota Badgers” baby onesie that Target accidentally made and tried to sell in stores in the Twin Cities.
The item featured Minnesota’s classic maroon-and-gold color scheme and logo, but included the mascot of the university’s arch rival, the Wisconsin Badgers. Minnesota graduate Kileigh Carpenter captured a photo of the hilarious onesie Sunday night at the Target near campus and shared it online. Her post quickly went viral.
“Color us red,” Target said in a statement to the Star Tribune after being notified of the misprint.
“As a Minnesota-based company, we know we are home to the Gophers. We’ve worked with our vendor to remove this item and apologize to any sports fans who might have been left scratching their head.”
While the Minneapolis-based company won’t be selling more of the wonky merchandise, there might be a market for it. Many people responded to the mix-up by saying the sweatshirt perfectly applies to them because they were born in Wisconsin but went to the University of Minnesota, or because they were born in Minnesota but went to the University of Wisconsin.
Target’s mistake inspired more mascot-based creativity, including ideas for the NFL.
