Scottish musician Sophie leaves Louis Vuitton's front row speechless

Louis Vuitton’s creative director Nicolas Ghesquière closed Paris Fashion Week spring/summer 2020 at the Louvre on Tuesday evening, with a show that was described by the French fashion house as the meeting of two centuries: “the dream-like dawn of the 20th century and the 21st century that yearns to remember it.”

As we are poised to enter a new decade in fashion, Ghesquière’s deftly futuristic showmanship will have also served, for many, as an introduction to the extraordinary talents of Scottish musician, producer and DJ, Sophie (full name Sophie Xeon) – who has previously worked with the likes of Madonna, Nicki Minaj, Charli XCX and Kendrick Lamar. To accompany the beatific, Seventies-infused spring/summer 2020 collection (shown on a wooden catwalk, sourced from sustainably managed French forests, and set to be recycled post-show in partnership with ArtStock), Louis Vuitton commissioned a stirring, ethereal video performance by the 33-year-old artist, which began by plunging the audience into total darkness.

Sophie’s head and shoulders, naked except for a slick of crimson red lipstick, appeared against the backdrop of a luminous sky on a floor-to-ceiling video screen that spanned the entire stage. As the euphoric electronic soundtrack amped up, a door opened and the first model stepped onto the runway in a sequin zig-zag grandad vest, atop a plaid balloon-sleeve shirt, paired with high-waisted slacks, her long crimped hair trailing as she walked. As a second model entered, Sophie began to sing an extended version of (originally released in 2017).

The performance was created especially for the spring/summer 2020 show, in collaboration with French video director and singer-songwriter Woodkid – aka Yoann Lemoine – who also has an impressive CV, having curated work with the likes of Lana Del Rey, Katy Perry and Drake.

Sophie (who is currently based in Los Angeles) looked on from the audience, as showgoers were rendered speechless by the track and visuals. It’s a performance that’s sure to be remembered as the swansong of the spring/summer 2020 fashion month.
