Robinson: Tottenham should sign free agent Khedira in the summer

Former Tottenham keeper Paul Robinson believes the club should look at signing Sami Khedira when he becomes a free agent in the summer, despite his age.

The World Cup winner is planning a move away from Juventus when his contract expires in June 2021.

Khedira is allowed to discuss a potential move with Spurs in January under the Bosman ruling. He is now aged 33, which means Spurs would only get a few years out of the player.

According to Robinson, Spurs boss Jose Mourinho could utilise Khedira’s experience.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former England number one said: “Look at the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, players can play on a lot longer than they used to.

“Ronaldo and Ibahimovic will be one of the fittest, if not the fittest in their squads.

“Professional footballers look after themselves and go on a lot longer. They are monitored on a daily basis.

“We no longer have players retiring at 30, 32 unless it is a really bad injury. Players are fitter and stronger and it is helping them elongate their careers.

“There is no reason why Khedira would not do that, he has a huge amount to offer, but you are not going to sign him on a three-year contract.”

Khedira was linked with a move to North London recently after he responded to claims about a reunion with Mourinho.

Khedira said he would ‘never say no’ to a reunion and also spoke about his dream of playing in the Premier League.

Spurs may need to move fast if they want to bring the player in on a free transfer.

News of his availability in June has already alerted Premier League clubs West Ham and Everton.

They view Khedira as a shrewd signing which could improve their midfield options going forward.

It looks like Khedira is nearing a Premier League debut despite being in the twilight years of his career.
