Rio, Scholes agree over Solskjaer mistake for Man Utd

Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes agreed over an Ole Gunnar Solsksjaer blunder in Manchester United’s 3-2 defeat to RB Leipzig.

United were pretty poor – as they often are – for the majority of the game on Tuesday and were 2-0 down after just 13 minutes at the Red Bull Arena.

They dominated possession in the second half but went 3-0 down after Harry Maguire and David de Gea committed crimes, before a late comeback could have snatched an unlikely draw to see them through.

But they left it too late and Scholes and Ferdinand claim Solskjaer himself was too slow in remedying what was a poor tactical decision from the outset.

Speaking to BT Sport, Ferdinand said: “I think the difference is when they’ve played three at the back before they’ve been up against people.

“They’ve had strikers up against them so you know exactly who is up against them – Neymar, Mbappe etc, it’s me against you.

“This team, the way Julian Nagelsmann set his team up, they were chasing shadows because people were being asked questions.

“Do I go and mark him or not? You’ve got Aaron Wan-Bissaka who didn’t have someone right up against him.”

“We were saying, Scholesy said it first, after 20 minutes, change two players now.

“Change from three at the back, definitely, to go with four so you’ve got an extra man in midfield.

“Didn’t do it, waited until half-time to make a substitution but again, the substitution, it was too late.

“It was 2-0 before he could make a substitution anyway.”
