Rio Ferdinand says Bernd Leno can have “zero excuses” after he was sent off for a bizarre deliberate handball in Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Wolves.

With Arsenal chasing the game having given up a 1-0 lead, Leno rushed from his area and batted the ball out of play with his arm having misjudged the bounce.

Referee Craig Pawson had no choice but to show the Arsenal goalkeeper a red card, after David Luiz had already been given his marching orders.

Ferdinand didn’t hold back on his thoughts on Leno’s mistake.

He told BT Sport: “With Leno, there are zero excuses for him.

“He’s misjudged the bounce of the ball and then from there it’s just comedy.”

Fellow pundit Glenn Hoddle attempted to explain the error, saying “He was in two minds and what was going through his mind I don’t think anyone will know. But he’s just got to play safe, he’s the last man, he always is as a goalie.

“Head it out, knock it out with your chest, do something.

“He’s got caught in two minds and it was disastrous for Arsenal because they should have wrapped the game up in the first half an hour.”
