Report reveals ‘furious’ Vertonghen reaction to Spurs decision
Jan Vertonghen was reportedly ‘fuming’ to be left out of Tottenham’s squad to play Aston Villa in their Premier League season opener on Saturday.
John McGinn gave the Villans the lead early on before Spurs finally made their quality count as a goal from Tanguy Ndombele and two more from Harry Kane gave Mauricio Pochettino’s side a 3-1 victory.
Pochettino insisted there was “no issue” with Vertonghen but he followed that by saying that he chose players who “deserved to play”.
And the Daily Mail claims that the versatile defender was ‘furious’ and ‘fuming’ at his omission from the squad altogether with his Tottenham team-mates ‘surprised he stayed to watch the game’.
The report adds that Pochettino left him out as he was ‘left unimpressed with the centre-back’s fitness following Spurs’s pre-season’.
Vertonghen attended the match despite finding out he was out of the squad on Friday with Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez starting in his place.
The Daily Mail adds that his ‘simmering unhappiness was picked up by his teammates ahead of the game and evident as he watched on from the stands.’
