Mauricio Pochettino has explained the transfer differences he faces compared to Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp.

Pochettino is preparing to welcome his first Tottenham signing since January 2018 in the coming days, with Jack Clarke’s deal to join from Leeds nearing completion.

The north London club are also interested in Tanguy Ndombele and William Saliba as they seek to strengthen a Champions League final-reaching hand.

But Pochettino admits that, unlike Manchester City coach Guardiola and Liverpool boss Klopp, he is not in control of the club’s transfer fate.

“It is imperative that this year we strengthen the team,” he told Catalunya Radio, according to the beautiful Sport Witness.

“We saved a lot of money in almost two years without signing, and that should allow us to strengthen ourselves well.”

Pochettino was at pains to point out that his was not the final decision, however.

“At Manchester City and Liverpool, Pep Guardiola and Jürgen Klopp are free to decide which players they want and which ones they do not,” he added.

“However, in other teams such as Tottenham, Chelsea or Arsenal the make up of the squad isn’t in the hands of the coaches. Who decides, in our case, is the president.”

On the subject of his own future, Pochettino said: “I gave my word to renew with Tottenham. Of course, it is a dream to train a club like Madrid, go to the Argentine team one day or go back to Espanyol one day, but I did not consider anything beyond Tottenham at that time.”
