Oscar Mayer May Have Just Ruined Hot Dogs, Ice Cream In One Bite
CHICAGO, IL — In releasing this week’s latest eyebrow-raising culinary creation, hot dog-maker Oscar Meyer threw down against mustard rival French’s by unveiling the newest example of just because you can, doesn’t necessarily mean you should.
To commemorate National Ice Cream Sandwich Day, Oscar Mayer unveiled the Ice Dog Sandwich, its attempt to one-up French’s mustard ice cream, releasing the concoction on Aug. 3.
What is the Ice Dog Sandwich? Think dessert with a questionable backyard barbecue twist. While the Ice Dog is crafted between a cookie bun made by Brooklyn-based bakery One Girl Cookies, it’s what’s inside that makes us pause for a second — hot dog sweet cream, Dijon gelato and candied hot dog bits.
The shade was real as Oscar Mayer called out French’s mustard ice cream, announced earlier this week as the company’s nod to National Mustard Day. French’s teamed up with ice cream company Coolhaus to create the unique flavor, and the mustard company says although the limited-run flavor “might sound crazy,” it tastes “damn good.”
In the spirit of congeniality, French’s even welcomed Oscar Mayer to try a scoop.
Does Oscar Mayer have the same level of confidence? Of course. The company partnered with New York City hand-made ice cream company il laboratorio del gelato to create the sandwich, and a spokesperson for Oscar Mayer said the Ice Dog is “actually delicious.”
The company even went so far as to transform its iconic Weinermobile into an ice cream truck. The Ice Dog Sandwich and the new and improved Weinermobile will make the rounds in New York City the week of Aug. 12, offering free samples to those who dare to live boldly.
One might wonder what exactly Oscar Mayer was thinking when this concoction was created. Luckily, they shared a little insight. “Because a hot dog for dinner should be chased by a hot dog for dessert,” an Oscar Mayer spokesperson said.
Arguable.
While we’re still not sure this treat will live up to the hype, we’re eagerly anticipating the reaction while simultaneously wondering what’s next.
