Of the 3,524 finishers none was faster than Olympic triathlete
Jarrod Shoemaker on the men’s side and Brighton’s Maria Varela, 27, who ran
17:36 to capture the women’s race.
Shoemaker, 26, of Maynard, quickly established a torrid pace
and shot out to an 80m gap over the remaining field. On April 6 at the Carlsbad
5000, Shoemaker had turned in an impressive performance, clocking 14:12 to
place 14th overall and as 4th American.
With the international array of flags flapping on Boylston
St., Shoemaker had the street to himself as he broke the tape in 14:28 (4:40)
pace. Thirty seconds later the BAA’s Matt Ely won a squeeker over Yardley, PA’s
Joey Wiegner as both athletes were timed in 14:58. The BAA’s Mike Chettle in
15:10 and Ben Schmeckpepper in 15:14 filled in the 4-5 spots.
Women’s winner Varela didn’t have nearly the breathing room
as men’s winner Shoemaker. Finishing in 17:36, Boston’s Emily Kroshus, 26, was
just four seconds in arrears. The next two slots were captured by elite
age-groupers Kathy Fleming, 41, of Natick and Olympic gold medalist Joan Samuelson,
51, of Freeport, ME.
Former Villanova miler Franey placed third among women in
17:39 followed closely by Samuelson in 17:42 (5:42 pace). The men’s Masters
title was taken by Wayne Levy, 47, of Waban. A former winner of the BAA Half
Marathon, Levy ran 16:22.
Beyond Samuelson, other past Boston champions partaking in the fun included Greg Meyer (1983),
Lorraine Moller (1984) and Ingrid Kristiansen (1986, 1989). BAA 5K Full Results Here
