North Carolina; Tennesee Swimmers Lead Assault on Girls Swimming Records

The girls high school swimming state championships in North Carolina and Tennessee produced some outstanding performances during the first weekend in February, including a few national records.

At the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state championships, Claire Curzan, a sophomore at Cardinal Gibbons in Raleigh, took aim at two national records in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly. A year after posting the third-fastest time ever in the event as a freshman, Curzan knocked nearly a second off the this year. Her time of :50.35 bettered Victoria Huske’s 2019 time of :51.29 to secure the top spot all time.

The same day in the backstroke, Curzan recorded a time of :51.38, good enough to overtake Olivia Smoliga’s 2012 national record time of :51.43. However, that record was short lived.

The next day in Tennessee, Gretchen and Alex Walsh – sisters swimming for Harpeth Hall in Nashville – etched their names in the record listings. The Walsh sisters competed at the Tennessee Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association state meet, which is verified by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association.

In the , older sister Alex edged Curzan’s time from North Carolina the night before by .03 seconds giving her the national record at :51.35. Gretchen, a junior, swam to the top of the freestyle rankings with national record times in the and .
