Nobody out there who could make Liverpool’s XI – Barnes

Liverpool legend John Barnes has defended the club’s lack of transfer activity by saying that there isn’t “anyone out there who can come into the first team”.

Jurgen Klopp guided Liverpool to within a point of Premier League champions Manchester City last campaign and many expected them to strengthen as they looked to get closer to Pep Guardiola’s outfit.

However, the Reds only chose to bring in youngsters Sepp van den Berg and Harvey Elliott, while the experienced former West Ham goalkeeper Adrian was also added to the squad.

And Barnes can see why Liverpool decided against strengthening as it would be hard to improve their starting XI.

“I don’t think there is anyone out there who can come into the first team,” Barnes told the Daily Mail. “You could say you could get someone to supplement the squad.

“Just look at Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and even Tottenham, they needed signings to go into the first XI but we don’t.

“There is no one out there who is going to take the spots of the front three or the midfield three or the back four.

“Of course with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Joe Gomez coming back in, who didn’t play last year, they are like two new signings. So I don’t think Liverpool needed to make signings this summer.”
