OREM, Utah — North Dakota State University 157-pound redshirt freshman Matt Gray (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot HS) has been named the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week after an outstanding performance on the mat last week. The conference award was announced Tuesday by the league.

Gray had a big weekend for NDSU at Northern Illinois’ Northern Duals last Saturday as he went a perfect 2-0 with a first-period fall over a ranked foe.

Gray opened up his run at the Northern Duals with a 7-5 decision over Jarrett Jensen of No. 17 Northern Iowa. He then helped the Bison defeat NIU in the final dual of the day by pinning Andrew Morse, who was ranked 11th in the country in last week’s AWN poll, in just 1:16. Gray’s pin over Morse sparked the Bison, as they went on to win four consecutive matches in their 21-16 come from behind victory over the Huskies..

The conference honor is Gray’s first of his career and with the two wins he improves to 2-1 on the young season.

The Western Wrestling Conference, which is in its eighth year of competition, is comprised of six schools including the Air Force Academy, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming.
