Australia’s own Naomi Watts has been confirmed to appear in the much-anticipated Game of Thrones prequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Tentatively titled Bloodmoon, The Sun has reported the sequel started filming in Belfast approximately two weeks ago.
Although the details of Watts’s role have been kept under wraps, the publication has confirmed it will be a lead role and Watts will portray a “charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.”
“It is intimidating. It’s very exciting,” Watts told the Associated Press. “And yes, having just come off the last series, where the world was blowing up over it. Everything was Game Of Thrones-related. All the advertising on TV, every article – everyone’s jumping on that bandwagon. So, it is scary.”
The star also promised that fans of the show won’t be disappointed with the new iteration, “I think they won’t be let down, it’s a great team of people they’ve put together.”
The prequel, which is being co-written by George R.R. Martin and British screenwriter Jane Goldman, will be set thousands of years before the current series and is slated to explore the origins of white walkers and the legends behind some of the series’ most mystifying worlds. It will not include any current cast members, and will not be a spinoff series — something Martin has made very clear.
The series will reveal secrets from the Game of Thrones world, answering many of the questions fans have about the current series. “Goldman’s project chronicles the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour,” reports Variety.
Poldark‘s Josh Whitehouse has also been cast in the series alongside Watts, together with the likes of Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Miranda Richardson, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp and Fantastic Beasts’ Toby Regbo. The prequel is also set to star Marquis Rodriquez, John Simm, Richard McCabe, John Heffernan, and Dixie Egerickx.
As for when when can expect the new series to hit our screens, HBO programming president Casey Bloys has confirmed it’s not likely to air until at least a year after the final season of Game of Thrones finishes up.
“My guess is that it would be at least a year before you saw anything else,” Bloys said at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour in July 2017. “What I don’t want is the attention to be drawn from the final season, which I think is going to be epic and amazing, and somehow have the distraction of a new Game of Thrones airing right after that. It’s best to separate it and that’s what we’ll do.”
It’s been a big few years for Watts in television, with the Australian actress signing on for a Showtime production about former Fox News head Roger Ailes, as well as starring in the Twin Peaks TV reboot for the network. She also recently appeared in Netflix’s Gypsy alongside on-screen and real life partner Billy Crudup.
