Maradona enjoyed some highly successful spells with Boca Juniors, Barcelona and Napoli. He was capped 91 times for Argentina and he famously led them to World Cup glory in 1986.

He hung up his boots in 1997 and he turned to managed as he was Argentina boss between 2008 and 2010.

It was here where he worked closely with Messi. The duo worked together at the 2010 World Cup as Argentina reached the Quarter-Final stage.

Messi took to his Instagram to reflect on the remarkable life and career of Maradona:

“A very sad day for all Argentines and for football. He’s left us but he hasn’t gone, because Diego is eternal.

“I’ll keep all the great times I enjoyed with him and want to take the opportunity to send my deepest respects to all his family and friends. RIP.”

Liverpool were meant to run out of steam. David Moyes wasn’t supposed to still be in a job. Oops.
