From book-to-film adaptations like To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and The Kissing Booth to TV series reboots such as Fuller House, powerhouse streamer Netflix is not afraid to tap any and all genres to bring binge-worthy content to our screens. And for their next genre, they’re looking to Broadway.
According to the streamer is adapting a Tony-nominated Broadway musical, The Prom, and has signed an all-star A-list cast to star.
Oscar-winning actresses Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep, along with pop icon Ariana Grande, Crazy Rich Asians’ breakout star, Awkwafina, and late night talk show host, James Corden, will reportedly be in Netflix’s movie version of the musical.
The story, based on a concept by Jack Viertel and a book by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin, follows a group of fading Broadway stars who travel together to the fictional town of Edgewater, Indiana, after they learn that a lesbian high school student has been forbidden from attending the prom when the school learns she is planning to bring her girlfriend as her date. The formerly famous stars arrive to fight the injustice and also, in the hope of reviving their own fading stars through the resulting publicity.
According to , Streep will play a Tony-winning character called Dee Dee Allen, Corden will play Barry Glickman and Kidman will take on the role of a “veteran chorus girl”, Angie Dickinson. Grande is set for the role of Alyssa Greene, the girlfriend of the main teen character, Emma, who is at the centre of the prom controversy.
While we’re lucky enough to hear Ariana Grande’s spectacular pipes almost anytime we turn on the radio or open our favourite music streaming service, we haven’t heard Nicole Kidman in a musical role for a while and it is something to look forward to. Who could forget her brilliant performance as Satine in Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 Moulin Rouge!?
Hit-making writer and producer Ryan Murphy is behind the project, and notes that it’s not the only theatre project he’s adapting for Netflix. According to the publication, Murphy is also adapting a play called The Boys in the Band for the streamer, with Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons and Zachary Quinto set to star.
