While Meghan Markle may have hit pause on her official royal tour duties, basing herself in Johannesburg with son Archie, while Prince Harry concludes his own tour leg, the duchess hasn’t remained totally static, making a number of private trips around the southern African country on her own.
Stepping out days ago while still in Cape Town, Markle made a personal trip to the Clareinch Post Office to visit the memorial, and leave her own personal tribute, for 19-year-old student, Uyinene Mrwetyana, who was raped and murdered in August 2019, a story she had closely followed.
Continuing her streak of unannounced appearances, the duchess recently visited Johannesburg’s Victoria Yards, a place for local artisans and craftspeople to work and let their handiwork shine.
As reported by People, the royal made a point of visiting one artisan in particular, Tshepo “The Jean Maker” Mohlala, who she actually placed an order with for a pair of custom jeans four week prior.
In a slightly left-of-field move (well, for a royal at least), Markle made a point of picking up her order personally, giving the designer behind the brand—who hails from the nearby township of Soweto—the chance to talk to the duchess about the growth of his business, and gift a tiny pair of overalls to her nearly-five-month-old son.
Not only did the custom element of the denim make her purchase special, the logo for Mohlala’s creations also contained a sweet hidden message. Embroidering each denim piece with a crown, the designer shared his reasoning behind the regal symbol: “The crown on my jeans represents the three ladies who raised me. Enjoy wearing this crown.” Of course, where Markle and son Archie are concerned, the connection to the crown motif is quite clear.
An off-duty favourite of Markle’s, the duchess’s penchant for denim has become all the more obvious on her current royal tour of Africa.
Working the fabric into her royal wardrobe at a steady rate over the years, the duchess has kicked her jean wearing into overdrive on her current trip, stepping out in a double denim look—complete with a Madewell jacket in a light blue hue, and black Mother jeans—during a visit to Monwabisi Beach in Cape Town with Prince Harry, and again when visiting the earlier mentioned memorial, selecting a pair of dark denim jeans from sustainable brand, DL1961, as confirmed by the UK Mirror.
So, surely it’s only a matter of time before her new pair of custom jeans have their chance to shine on tour.
