The Duchess of Sussex made a second surprise appearance this week, stepping out without baby Archie but with a special nod to him, to cheer on her friend, tennis champion Serena Williams, at the 2019 Wimbledon tennis tournament.

The mother-of-one is currently on maternity leave from royal duties meaning sightings of the duchess are rare. However, this week, royal fans have been treated to two separate Markle appearances.

Over the past weekend, the Duchess of Sussex joined her husband, Prince Harry, at a baseball game in London, which was in aid of Prince Harry’s international sporting initiative for wounded and veteran service personnel, the Invictus Games. The cause is close to both their hearts not just because it’s such an important initiative, but because at the 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto, they made their first official public debut as a couple.

Although Markle stepping out to support Prince Harry at the baseball game was unscheduled and a surprise, it makes sense for this royal couple, who are not only exceptionally supportive of each other’s causes but who are also making their own rules and forming new traditions with each new stage of their marriage and life.

The duchess’s second surprise appearance out and about this week to attend Wimbledon is also not entirely unexpected given how close she and Williams are. Earlier this year, Williams and Amal Clooney threw Markle a baby shower in New York, which the duchess flew in specially for. However, despite throwing the duchess a baby shower, Williams recently revealed that she won’t be giving her friend any parenting advice — Williams has a one-year-old daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. with her husband, Alexis Ohanian — telling the BBC  in a video interview as much. “You know what, I never pass on words of wisdom, because I feel like when everyone has a kid —  especially when they’ve just had a baby — it’s so difficult to just be.”

Parenting advice aside, the duchess’s baby son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, was clearly on her mind during her day out at Wimbledon. Taking her seat at centre court between Lindsay Roth and Genevieve Hillis, who are reportedly friends of Markle’s from her university days, the duchess was casually chic in a cream pinstriped L’Agence blazer, black top, dark skinny jeans, black suede pumps and a new gold necklace with the letter ‘A’ on it.

Markle, 37, has worn the blazer before — debuting it in Sydney during the 2019 royal tour of Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga — but the necklace is new and noteworthy. When the couple were first dating, Markle wore a similar necklace with the letters ‘H’ and ‘M’ on it (Meghan’s Mirror identified the necklace as from Canadian jewellery brand The Right Hand Gal).

While we don’t as yet have confirmation if this new ‘A’ necklace is also from the brand, and whether it was a gift from Prince Harry, it’s a very special tribute to her baby son, Archie, who will be christened this weekend.
