Meghan Markle made a surprise return from maternity leave and captured it all on Instagram Stories

Here we were desperately waiting for baby Archie’s christening to get another glimpse at the Duchess of Sussex, only for her to make a surprise appearance at an event in London this past weekend. The Duchess of Sussex joined her husband, Prince Harry, to attend the first of a two-game series of the Major League Baseball in London. The royal couple went along to watch the New York Yankees play the Boston Red Sox, all for a good cause–in support of Prince Harry’s own initiative, The Invictus Games.

Meghan Markle’s appearance at the event wasn’t just unscheduled but it was also quite a shock, given Her Royal Highness is currently on maternity leave after welcoming the couple’s first child, Archie. Nevertheless, the Duchess of Sussex turned up in a belted Stella McCartney LBD and Aquazzura heels, casually strolling onto the pitch with Prince Harry as if we were all in on the secret.

The couple visited both baseball teams in their dressing rooms at London’s Olympic Stadium, during which the Yankees gifted the couple a very cute baseball jersey for their son. It featured “Archie” with the number “19” on it, presumably as a nod to his year of birth. Over in the Red Sox dressing room, they received a similar gift of a miniature red jersey.

The couple were attending as part of a partnership with the Invictus Games Foundation, who have a team of their own participating in a social softball series. The Invictus Games was created by Prince Harry and allows injured or sick servicemen and servicewomen to participate in an Olympics-style games–last year it was held in Sydney. At the baseball, the couple watched on as Invictus Games competitors threw the ceremonial first pitch. The Duchess of Sussex was apparently overheard saying, “I’m so glad they didn’t ask me to do it!” The couple then took their seats to watch the game, and in case you’re wondering, the Yankees won.

The surprise appearance also coincided with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex trialling out Instagram Stories for the very first time on their account, @sussexroyal. The couple documented their day with a series of posts, marking the first time they’d used the tool. They also posted to their grid, see above. 

Although the Duchess of Sussex chose to attend the event at the weekend, sadly (for us!), it’s not her official return from maternity leave. Instead, it was a sign of how supportive she is of her husband, and his Invictus Games initiative. The next time we can expect to see the Duchess of Sussex is at Archie’s christening, rumoured to be taking place this weekend!
