McCoist claims he’s more likely than Gerrard to be Everton manager

Rangers legend Ally McCoist has suggested that there’s a “better chance” of him being the next Everton manager than Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard took his first step into management in 2018 as he was named as Rangers’ new boss.

The Liverpool icon led Rangers to consecutive second-place finishes in the Scottish Premier League in his first two seasons in charge.

Ancelotti exit sends Everton back to square one. Again.

Rangers were out to stop Celtic from winning their tenth successive league title in 2020/21. They did just that, as they finished 25 points clear of their arch-rivals to win the title.

Gerrard has been linked with Everton, Spurs and Wolves in recent weeks. But McCoist has told takSPORT (as cited by Glasgow Live) that Gerrard is “on board” with Rangers:

“He’s got Champions League football to look forward to! He’s looking to get two in a row!

“We’ve just for the second year in a row -and we’ve not had any supporters in all season – we’ve just sold 40,000 season tickets. The club’s going through the roof!

“He’s on board, he’s going into his fourth season having won the championship in his third, he’s got a board that back him, he’s doing ever so well.

“Come on guys, let’s be realistic about this. There’s a better chance of me being the Everton manager than Steven Gerrard!”

Last month, Peter Crouch insisted that Tottenham should be looking to appoint Gerrard:

“I actually played in a youth game when I was 18 for Spurs against Liverpool.

“Steven played that day and was ridiculous; he was on another level. He was so good that Alan Sugar immediately tried to sign him for Tottenham afterwards, but it was a complete non-starter.

“Steven’s stock is rising and the way he has overseen the renaissance of Rangers is outstanding.

“I hear people talking about the strength of the Scottish League and questioning the quality but what I would argue is this: if it was so easy, why aren’t teams going unbeaten every year?

“He is going to be an outstanding manager and if I was running Tottenham, I would absolutely be interested in a man of his calibre.

“But could you see Steven Gerrard managing anyone in the Premier League other than Liverpool? No. Nor can I.

“When Steven returns to England, it will be to take over from Jurgen Klopp. I really don’t see it any other way.”
