Maguire only absentee at England training ahead of Euro 2020

Harry Maguire was the only player missing from training on Wednesday as England’s preparations continued towards their European Championship opener against Croatia.

Gareth Southgate’s men kick-off Group D against their 2018 World Cup semi-final foes at Wembley on Sunday.

Manchester United captain Maguire is set to miss that match with an ankle ligament injury sustained at Aston Villa last month.

The 28-year-old is continuing rehab and continued work in the gym on Wednesday as the other 25 members of the Euro 2020 squad trained at St George’s Park.

Bukayo Saka was with the group after missing Sunday’s friendly against Romania with a hip issue.

Jordan Henderson also trained as he continued to build fitness, having undergone groin surgery in February.

During his latest press conference (as cited by the Press Association), Southgate revealed that Maguire “should be available” for England at the Euros.

He said: “With any injury, it’s impossible to predict 100 per cent.

“Our medical team are pleased with his progress, and particularly over the last couple of days. We know there is always that risk, but all of the guide is that he should be available, and it’s a case of when he can slot back into training with the group and how quickly we can progress him. But of course there is always that risk with any injury that you only have to have one minor setback, and two or three days here and there really affects those timelines.

“So I’m very realistic about that. We’ve picked a squad on the basis that if we didn’t have him, we’ve got the players to come in, and if he’s able to be fit and available, then that’s a bonus for us.”
