Norwegian-American actress Kristine Froseth is fast making a name for herself as part of Hollywood’s next generation of talent. She’s landed the most coveted roles in the coolest teenage and young adult offerings, such as star turns in Looking for Alaska and The Society.

Starting out as a model after reportedly being scouted at a local shopping centre, Froseth then transitioned to acting after being cast in the 2016 TV series Junior. Fast forward just three short years and the model and actress, who grew up between Norway and America, is already playing in the entertainment industry major leagues, in large part thanks to her key role in Looking for Alaska.

The 23-year-old plays the titular role of Alaska Young in the eight-episode TV adaptation based on the best-selling John Green novel of the same name (currently streaming on Stan). Froseth admitted to Vogue during a recent phone conversation that she was a longtime fan of the story from her high school years and, prior to being cast, felt a strong connection to the character.

“I remember the first time reading it [the John Green novel] and… I felt really understood, because you know, going through all these emotions I was going through at the time, just growing [up] and being in high school. And [I] just felt like I could have known how to turn into Alaska’s character,” she said. “I feel like what John Green does so well is, he’s just such an honest and open guy and he is really good at putting the struggles with these questions that you have throughout life onto paper through these like, quirky, interesting characters.”

Aside from the allure of playing Alaska, the character, the actress shared that she was drawn to be a part of the series because of the calibre of who was behind the production, namely Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the creative duo responsible for iconic TV series Gossip Girl. “Getting to know that Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage were doing it [the series] was just like… it was a dream, a total dream.”

Notably, Froseth’s casting as Alaska appears as though it was destined to be. The actress read the novel “a couple of times” when she was growing up and was even previously cast to play the role in a slated film adaptation of the novel, which didn’t end up going ahead.

Given her familiarity with the character, the actress said her preparation to play Alaska Young was different from other roles. Froseth also revealed that she had the opportunity to spend time with the novel’s author, John Green, as well as her co-star Charlie Plummer, who plays Miles Halter, nicknamed “Pudge”. “It’s interesting because with Looking for Alaska I feel like I carried Alaska around with me for like four years,” Froseth told Vogue. “So I feel like I never let her go and that helped, but in addition, Charlie [Plummer] and I, we actually got to go to the real Culver Creek with John Green. He drove us around and told us the stories and showed us, you know, all the new locations and that really was the game changer for me.”

Froseth’s level of preparedness and understanding of Alaska translates into a performance in the series that fans of the novel will undoubtedly appreciate. It’s authentic and real and resoundingly cements this young actress’s place in Hollywood’s next-gen list of names to know.
