Lampard: Clean sheets will breed Chelsea ‘confidence’

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was pleased that his side did not concede against Sevilla and he hopes it can improve the confidence of his defence.

Throughout Lampard’s time as Chelsea boss, there has been uncertainty surrounding their goalkeeper. The Blues signed Kepa Arrizabalaga in 2018 for £70m, making him the world’s most expensive ever ‘keeper.

But his time at the club has been overshadowed with constant criticism. Lampard has tried to sort these issues by signing Edouard Mendy this summer from Rennes for £22m.

Big Weekend: Man Utd v Chelsea, Brewster, Ancelotti, Villa

Mendy appears to be Chelsea’s new number one goalkeeper. He started in their 0-0 draw against Sevilla Stamford Bridge this week. This is just their third clean sheet of the season in all competitions.

Speaking during his press conference on Friday, Lampard was delighted at keeping a clean sheet against Sevilla, who won the Europa League last season:

“I think keeping clean sheets always gives confidence and that’s great. But it simplistic to say because you conceded these things were wrong and because you kept a clean sheet it was all right.

“I’ve got to constantly analyse what is good and what is bad. Some parts off the ball against Sevilla was not as good as what I wanted it to be out.

“Defensively and resilience it was good, that really pleased me.”

Chelsea sit eighth in the Premier League after five games. Their only defeat of the campaign came against Liverpool. Lampard’s side have also dropped points in 3-3 draws against West Brom and Southampton.

Next up is Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have had a mixed start to the season.

They are down in 15th place at the moment, after winning two and losing two of their first four games. Yet United go into the weekend on the back of an impressive 2-1 win at PSG in the Champions League.

Speaking on the game, Lampard said they will take the Red Devils at ‘face value’:

“I think the league is unpredictable, you could analyse Manchester United or talk about games where big teams have conceded goals or been part of turnarounds, we’ve been part of them.

“Manchester United are a very good side, we played them enough last season to know that. I’m not concerned about games before, we will take them at face value.”
