Klopp ‘impressed’ as Liverpool make huge plans for £2.5m loanee

Liverpool have loaned Marko Grujic back to Hertha Berlin with a view to integrating him back into their first team for the 2020/21 season.

Grujic was Jurgen Klopp’s first Reds signing in January 2016, joining from Red Star Belgrade for £5.1m.

The midfielder was loaned straight back to Serbia as the first of three temporary spells elsewhere, with Cardiff and Hertha both benefiting from his talents over the past two seasons.

Pal Dardai, head coach of the latter club, described Grujic as “by far the best midfielder I’ve seen in my time at the club” and has had his wish to keep him for another campaign granted.

Grujic signed terms on a deal that will see him return to the Bundesliga club, who will pay Liverpool £2m plus £500,000 in potential bonuses. There is also a penalty structure contained in the deal designed to guarantee playing time.

BBC Sport, the Liverpool Echo and Goal.com all say this move comes with the blessing of Klopp, who has been ‘impressed’ by the midfielder’s ‘maturity and attitude’. His decision to stay at Hertha has also been well received, with Atletico Madrid, Atalanta, Brighton, Eintracht Frankfurt and Werder Bremen all unsuccessful in their approaches.

The Echo add that while his path to the first team is currently ‘cluttered’, Liverpool hope that there will be place for the 23-year-old to establish as his own in the squad in 2020/21. BBC and Goal both claim he will be an ‘important part’ of their future.
