Keane can’t resist dig at Cavani despite Man Utd brace

Roy Keane couldn’t resist having a little dig at Man Utd striker Edinson Cavani over his delayed entry onto the pitch at half-time despite the Uruguayan bagging a brace in a 3-2 win at Southampton.

Saints were on course for their first home league win against the Red Devils since 2003, with Jan Bednarek and James Ward-Prowse giving them a two-goal cushion heading into half-time.

But Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s decision to turn to summer signing Cavani at the interval proved inspired, with the veteran striker setting up Bruno Fernandes before scoring a brace to seal a 3-2 triumph at the death.

OPINION: He stoops to conquer: Cavani was worth the wait…

The second half kicked off without Cavani, with Man Utd temporarily down to ten men as the 33-year-old chnaged his boots on the touchline.

Keane called his failure to prepare “mind-boggling” before hailing his contribution from the bench.

“He was obviously slow getting onto the pitch with them boots. Just as well he did score because how the guy is not prepared and ready to go on… it’s mind-boggling,” Keane said on Sky Sports.

“Obviously he didn’t need the boots in the end, scored with two headers. But great contribution when he came on. He still has that quality and that hunger and desire.”

Speaking about Cavani’s overall performance, Keane added: It was always a gamble when he came to the club, people were doubting why he didn’t have a club. Did he have the hunger? The desire?

“We’ve seen clips of him there, and clips in some other games, and you think, ‘Has he still got it?’ and we’ve seen proof of it today.

“He could turn out to be a huge signing for United. It was a bit of a gamble really, but it’s obviously worked out well today.”
