If you’ve ever wanted to live like royalty but don’t quite have the connections to move into one of Queen Elizabeth’s many castles, never fear. Thankfully, some royals weren’t always so and once lived normal, regular lives like us — living in normal, regular houses. Kate Middleton, or as she’s now known, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, was one such person.
Back when she didn’t have a royal title, wasn’t married to Prince William and didn’t live in Kensington Palace’s Apartment 1A with her three royal children, George, Charlotte and Louis, Kate was (sort of) just a regular woman. And with that came a regular house — which has now recently sold.

All the best parts of the Duchess — her understated royal style and serious grace and elegance — is reflected in the three bedroom Chelsea home, which recently went on the market for a cool $3.448 million, selling for just under asking price for $3.36 million. Although three million might seem like a fair bit to ask for a modest sized London home, it’s a lot cheaper than buying a castle in Scotland — and Chelsea is a much better location than any affordable castle we’ve seen.

The flat, which was bought by the Middleton parents, Carole and Michael, in 2002, originally cost $1.3 million (£780,000), meaning the couple made a serious profit from the sale. And while we’re sure inflation and property prices had something to do with the profit, having a future Queen of England living in the home might have something to do with their win.

Featuring three bedrooms and two bathrooms, the property is spread over three levels and includes a master bedroom with sweeping views of the street and is complete with an en suite bathroom. A large living room — or ‘reception room’ — makes up the bulk of the living space on the second floor, with the three bedrooms all located on the top floor.

Facing east to west, the property is bathed with light — an important feature in rainy London.

Decorated in a neutral, traditional style, the flat has new kitchen and bathroom finishings but will allow the new owners to put their own stamp on the property, too. And although we can’t be certain the furniture is the same as when Kate lived there, it does have the same regal feel as Kensington Palace’s reception area.

Kate has not lived in the home since 2009, before she was engaged to marry Prince William. Pippa Middleton now lives with her husband and son in their $30 million, recently renovated home in London, which features everything from an underground movie theatre to staff quarters.

While it might not be a Palace, it certainly will make a happy home for a family of royal lovers.
