It’s officially been announced that the 1996 movie, The Craft, is getting a reboot. According to Deadline, Blumhouse and Columbia Pictures have officially announced that Zoe Lister-Jones (of New Girl and Whitney) is writing and directing the new rendition.

The original starred Robin Tunney, Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell, Christine Taylor, Rachel True, and Skeet Ulrich, and the plot followed a bunch of moody teen witches out to wreak havoc on their peers. Sarah, the new girl at a Los Angeles high school (played by Tunney) buddied up with the troubled threesome when they learnt of her highly intuitive ability to control things and people without physical intervention. After some success with their spells and rituals, the girls got a taste for power, resulting in a dark journey with some dire magical consequences.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, relative newcomer, Cailee Spaeny, is in talks to star as one of the witches in the reboot. The  21-year-old American actress and singer has already garnered some impressive credits to her name, including roles in Bad Times at the El Royale, On the Basis of Sex and Vice.

The appointment of Lister-Jones as director marks a milestone in film, seeing as the Blumhouse company founder, Jason Blum, was recently heavily criticised for not hiring enough female directors in the horror genre. Blum has since apologised, and seems to be making good on his promise to rectify the issue.

Lister-Jones has taken to Instagram to confirm the news and express her excitement to be working on the project, captioning her post, “Dreams. Come. True.”

Previously, Lister-Jones has written, produced, and starred in various projects, including New Girl, Lola Versus, Breaking Upwards and Life in Pieces.

Based on the original, we can expect it to fall loosely into the horror genre, with a lot of magic, teenage angst, dark lipstick, as well as a female-centred cast and plot line.
