Inside the National Institute of Dramatic Art’s Diamond Anniversary dinner

As part of its landmark 60th anniversary celebrations, the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), hosted an exclusive Diamond Anniversary dinner in an evening dedicated to the founding of the institution’s NIDA Student Fund, which aids in-house students in their plight to create, present and perform their many works.

Having a personal connection to the dramatic institution, widely-admired and award-winning Australian actor, Rob Collins—who has starred in a number of Australian and international productions, including The Wrong Girl, Cleverman and Mystery Road—stepped on stage on the evening to speak to the immense benefit the fund provided him while he was a student at NIDA, having had to move from Darwin to train at the Sydney-based institute.

Following Collins’s speech, notable NIDA alumni—including Hugh Sheridan and veteran Australian actor, Peter Cousens—along with the school’s existing musical theatre students, provided entertainment for attendees throughout the evening.

As the evening was dedicated to the institution’s student fund, the dinner also aimed to raise funds for it, with Braveheart producer Bruce Davey and Australian businessman, Andrew Banks, making generous donations as NIDA donors, along with a raffle conducted on the night, which alone raised $17,000.

Today, NIDA accepts over 200 full-time students into a number of programs at its Kensington campus, many of which are directly benefiting from the fund. The school also opens its doors to more than 12,500 part-time and short class students, in addition to 2,900 clients which take part in NIDA Corporate’s training for professionals each year.
