‘I felt something hit my eyes and then it went dark’: Opposition campaigner loses sight in crackdown for Bangladesh election

Marina Begum’s Bangladeshi election campaign ended prematurely in mid-December when pellets allegedly fired during an opposition rally ripped into her face and stole her eyesight.

The high-profile opposition activist is one of more than one hundred people who have been injured during election violence in the run up to Bangladesh’s general election on Sunday, according to government opponents.  

Amid raging street battles, about 600,000 police and troops have been deployed to provide security as Sheikh Hasina, 71, the prime minister in power since 2009, and her ruling Awami League party seek a third consecutive term.
