Council president lends his support to football tournament.

The networking skills of Herman Van Rompuy, the president of the European Council, are legendary. 

On Sunday, while his office was being besieged by thousands of sweaty athletes running the Brussels 20km, Van Rompuy was in Overijse, to make an appearance at the European Commission’s annual football tournament.

The Schuman trophy is a tournament between different Commission departments. In addition, there was an inter-institutional competition, featuring teams from the European Parliament, the Council of Ministers and the commissioners’ cabinets.

Heartened by Van Rompuy’s presence, the Council team won. The Schuman trophy itself was won by a team from the directorate-general for research with the help of some players from the European Research Agency. They won on penalties, after a two-all draw.
