‘He annoyed me’ – Ex-Chelsea man slams Man Utd star in EL loss

Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf says Man Utd midfielder Bruno Fernandes “annoyed” him in their Europa League final defeat to Villarreal.

Edinson Cavani levelled after Gerard Moreno had opened the scoring from a first-half free-kick in Poland, where the match ended 1-1 after extra-time and went to penalties.

Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli saved David de Gea’s spot-kick to seal an epic 11-10 shootout triumph as the Spanish side lifted the Europa League trophy on Wednesday night.

If Manchester United are serious then Solskjaer must go

Fernandes, who has been brilliant this season, was one player who had a disappointing evening for Man Utd and Leboeuf was frustrated that the Portugal international is “always trying to find injustice”.

“He annoyed me,” Leboeuf told ESPN. “At certain points he was always complaining to the referees like he did today, always trying to find injustice and trying to the be sheriff on the field.

“Yeah, he annoyed me. On top of it yes, an excellent player but not there when you really need him in big games. Today was a big game and we hardly saw him.”

Meanwhile, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand praised Villarreal boss Unai Emery for winning the tactical battle with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Scholes told BT Sport: “Obviously it’s a really disappointing night. I thought it was a really poor game on the whole really. Three shots on target all night, United would be the ones you’d expect to take the game to them.

“We spoke a lot before the game about the effect Bruno Fernandes has for United. Unai Emery is probably the first manager who has really tried to snuff that out and he did that tonight.

“Whoever was closest to him got really against him. Capoue especially was the one, [Francis] Coquelin when he came on got right against him. Don’t let him get his head up because he will destroy you. And tonight I don’t really remember him having an effect on the game.”

Ferdinand added: “I just think tactically Unai Emery got it spot on tonight.

“Bruno, as Scholesy said, was absolutely nullified and he was close down at all times and the space for people like Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani to get behind and exploit that space – with their pace and movement and anticipation – was never there today.”
