According to The Telegraph, Guardiola and City have officially begun negotiations about a new deal.

That news will be music to the ears of most City fans who were worried about the manager being available to leave after this campaign.

Guardiola has remained tight-lipped about the situation. He has downplayed rumours about a return to Barcelona, saying his career in Barcelona is ‘over’.

But that interview didn’t stop rumours about a move to a new club.

Guardiola has previously managed Bayern Munich, where he won countless trophies. He helped the German titans to win three league trophies and two German league cups.

The 49-year-old has failed to win the Champions League since the 2010/11 campaign with Barca.

Whilst in Spain, he also won two Spanish cups and three league titles, making him one of the most successful managers of all time.

The fresh news about a contract extension comes at an interesting time. City are currently linked with a move for Barca superstar Lionel Messi.

They want the player to join for a few seasons in the Premier League before moving to their club in America, New York City FC.

It’s unclear right now whether Messi is willing to leave the club as he seems to have backtracked on his transfer request.

His intentions might become clear when the new Barca President is unveiled next year.

For now, City fans can relax knowing that Guardiola is close to agreeing a new deal with the club.

That contract could also prove to be an important factor in their pursuit of Messi.
