Sir Alex Ferguson has been in touch with David Moyes to ask how Jesse Lingard is settling in at West Ham.

Lingard did not make his first-team debut for Manchester United during Ferguson’s time at the club. But the midfielder was in and around the first team before he called time on his managerial career.

After making his senior debut in 2014/15, Lingard went onto make 210 appearances for the Red Devils and he scored 33 times.

The 28-year-old had fallen down the pecking order for Man United this season, having made just three appearances in all competitions. This led to his January loan switch to West Ham United.

Lingard made an instant impact for West Ham as he scored twice in his Premier League debut against Aston Villa.

Speaking ahead of Monday’s game against Sheffield United, as cited by Football London, Moyes said Ferguson was “pleased” that Lingard had started well for the Hammers:

“He’s only here in the short term but already I’ve spoken with Sir Alex, who asked me to pass on his best to Jesse. He mentioned he was thinking about him because Sir Alex had him as a boy at Old Trafford. And then when I was there I had him for a little bit as well just at the start of it.

“That just shows you the interest Sir Alex has in all the young players he had, all his teams and all his clubs he shows a great interest in them and he was pleased Jesse got off to a good start.

“I refer back to my time at Everton when I brought Phil Neville in and I brought Tim Howard in.

“Phil Neville was great for his mentality and what he brought, it really gave us another edge. Him as a player as well gave us something else. I’m hoping Jesse does the same.”
