The Football Association is set to investigate reports that Saturday’s Women’s Super League match between Manchester United and Liverpool was marred by chanting about the Hillsborough disaster.

The PA news agency understands the FA will ask both clubs for their observations about the alleged incidents during the match that was watched by around 2,800 fans at Leigh Sports Village.

It marked the first time United, who were promoted to the top flight at the end of last season, and Liverpool have met in a Women’s Super League match. The hosts won the match 2-0.

According to the BBC, the chanting was reported in the standard match report submitted after the game by Liverpool officials.

In April 2016, an inquest concluded the 96 people who died in a crush during Liverpool’s FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough in April 1989 had been unlawfully killed.
