Everything you need to know about the Gossip Girl reboot

After years of passionate campaigning and a number of unsubstantiated rumours suggesting a reboot was on the cards, it has finally been confirmed that a Gossip Girl remake is officially in the works. 

Yes you read that correctly, and no, you’re not dreaming. Deadline has confirmed the original show’s team of ingenious producers, including Joshua Safron, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, are all on board.

To find out who has been cast in the reboot, what the premise of the series will be, and whether or not we can expect to see the likes of Blake Lively, Blair Waldorf and Penn Badgley return to our screens, read on for what we know so far about Gossip Girl 2.0. 

Although CW president Mark Pedowitz couldn’t confirm whether or not a reboot was a possibility during the Television Critics Association press tour in February, Deadline reports HBO Max has now ordered 10 hour-long episodes of a Gossip Girl remake. Meaning yes, a reboot of the original series is most definitely on its way.

While at this stage, the cast of the reboot has not yet been revealed, Teen Vogue reports that co-creator Josh Schwartz revealed the producers of the series have reached out to the actors that played the characters fans came to know and love in the cult-followed original. 

“We’ve reached out to all of them to let them know it was happening and we’d love for them to be involved if they want to be involved, but certainly didn’t want to make it contingent upon [them being involved],” Schwartz explained during the TV Critics Association summer press tour, per Teen Vogue. 

“They played these characters for six years, and if they felt like they were good with that, we want to respect that, but obviously…it would be great to see them again,” he added, and we couldn’t agree more.

Although the show is slated to be a remake, and is set to pick up eight years on from where Gossip Girl left off, we aren’t ready to imagine a return of the original series without it’s iconic cast, and we may not have to. 

“It sort of all depends,” Lively told Variety in 2017, when quizzed on whether or not she’d participate in a reboot. “I’ve learned in life you never say never. But would I do that? Who knows — if it was good, if it made sense.” Similarly, Meester revealed in May that she’d “never say never,” and Crawford confirmed he’d be “open to looking at something.”

As for whether or not we can expect Veronica Mars’s Kristen Bell to return as the narrator of the series, when quizzed on the possibility, she responded in classic Gossip Girl fashion, telling E! News: “Maybe, I’ll never tell.” 

Although the reboot has enlisted the help of the original series’s executive producers, together with its writing team, Deadline has confirmed it will be set “eight years after the original website went dark” and a “new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl.”

However, according to Schwartz, unlike in the original series, the role of Gossip Girl will not be played by a single assailant, so prepare to say goodbye to Lonely Boy. “It didn’t really feel like a group of adults who were being controlled by Gossip Girl would make a lot of sense,” Schwartz explained, per E! News. 

“There was something really interesting about this idea that we are all Gossip Girl now, in our own way,” he added. “We are all purveyors of our own social media surveillance state, and how that’s evolved, and how that has morphed and mutated and telling that story through a new generation of Upper East Side high school kids felt like the right time.” 

Unfortunately, the Gossip Girl reboot’s release date is yet to be revealed, so be sure to watch this space as we continue to update this story as details of the remake come to light.
