On August 2, Netflix surprised its viewers with an update on one of its many hit TV series, 13 Reasons Why. The streaming platform began by announcing the premiere date of the show’s third season, together with the news that it had been renewed for a fourth and final installment.

While at this stage, there is not all that much to know about the mysterious fourth season, we thought it timely to update you on what we do know ahead of the premiere of 13 Reasons Why’s third season, which Netflix revealed is airing on August 23. Be sure to check back as we continue to update this story with news on the fourth installment as it begins to surface.

According to Variety, Netflix has confirmed 13 Reasons Why has been renewed for a fourth and final season. The publication has also revealed that production on the series’s final installment has already begun.

There is no news yet on who has been cast in the fourth season of 13 Reasons Why, however it is likely the entire cast – or rather, those that are still alive and well following the conclusion of season three – will be back for the final installment. That means you can expect to see the likes of Dylan Minnette as Clay Jensen, Brandon Flynn as Justin Foley, Alisha Boe as Jessica Davis, Christian Navarro as Tony Padilla, Miles Heizer as Alex Standall, Devin Druid as Tyler Down, and Ross Butler as Zach Dempsey return for the final season.

The fourth season of 13 Reason Why, directed by Brian Yorkey, and executive produced by Mandy Teefey, Kristel Laiblin, Selena Gomez, and Joy Gorman, will pick up where season three leaves off. However, as we are yet to welcome the return of season three, which is set to premiere on Netflix on August 23, we’re not quite sure where that is just yet. According to People, it will feature the cast’s graduation from Liberty High.

Per Variety, the third season takes place eight months after Tyler Down attempts to take his own life. The official trailer leads viewers to believe that the storyline centres around the mystery surrounding the death of football player Bryce Harper, played by Justin Prentice. Yes, before the season even airs, we have been confronted with the news that Harper goes missing following a “tumultuous Homecoming game,” as well as the revelation that Clay Jensen, who “finds himself under police scrutiny,” is, in fact, a suspect.

Season one and two of 13 Reasons Why aired in May of 2017 and 2018 respectively, while season three is set to premiere in August, 2019. As such, it’s likely season four, which is reportedly already in production, will return to our screens some time in 2020 with another 13 hour-long episodes.
