However, the character of Nancy Drew came well before Veronica Mars. Nancy Drew first appeared in a series of mystery novels back in the 1930s, written by various authors all under the pen name, Carolyn Keene. Since then, with new Nancy Drew books continuing to be published regularly, a couple of Nancy Drew TV series and movies (one 2007 film notably starred Emma Roberts as Nancy), the amateur sleuth has become a pop culture icon, entertaining multiple generations and gaining a legion of fans for her plucky, can-do brilliance no matter what mystery comes her way.
In the upcoming TV series from the CW network, Nancy Drew has reportedly had a Riverdale-style noir makeover, turning her character into a less-than-perfect teen sleuth with issues.
Deadline reports Nancy Drew — who has grown up solving crimes around her town of Horseshoe Bay, Maine, and is about to head off to university — puts her university plans on hold and swears off sleuthing after her mother dies in an untimely way. But, when a socialite is murdered, Nancy finds herself and four other teens who were also at the scene of the crime, prime suspects.
Naturally, Nancy has to dust off her detective cap and work with the other accused teens to solve the crime and clear their names. Keeping in mind that these are teens we’re talking about here, so expect many emotions, a tonne of drama and possibly even some romance.
Given the CW network is behind the series, it should come as no surprise that Deadline reports a supernatural mystery is also weaved into the story. The CW is renowned for not only some of the biggest fan favourite teen TV shows — Gossip Girl, 90210, The Carrie Diaries, One Tree Hill, Veronica Mars — but also their supernatural shows, with Riverdale, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and the forthcoming Batwoman all on the network’s past, present and future slate.
Newcomer Kennedy McMann will be playing the title role of Nancy Drew. The other teens involved in the murder mystery include George, played by Leah Lewis, a character Deadline reports is Nancy’s high school nemesis; a mysterious teen named Bess played by Maddison Jaizani; Nancy’s “secret” boyfriend, Ned “Nick” Nickerson played by Tunji Kasim; and another teen called Ace, played by Alex Saxon.
Nancy’s dad, Carson Drew, who is a very successful lawyer in the novels, is being played by Party of Five’s Scott Wolf.

According to Deadline, Nancy Drew is set to air in the US on the CW network on October 19, 2019 after Riverdale. No confirmation as yet on an Australian air date or where we can watch it, but considering Netflix picked up similar CW series including Riverdale, we’re guessing it’s only a matter of time before the streamer adds Nancy Drew to its slate.
