If you’ve been anywhere near social media recently you may have noticed a slew of posts featuring body parts, legs in particular, being subject to transformative make-up makeovers.
A host of cult-favourite beauty brands, including Kim Kardashian West’s KKW Beauty, Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty and M.A.C now have products in the body foundation category and it seems every beauty influencer and beauty-loving celebrity is getting on board with the trend.
The internet’s favourite celebrity, Chrissy Teigen, recently showed off her body makeover using body foundation. The celebrity shared a picture with her 24.5 million Instagram followers with her legs up in the air mid make-up application, and in true Teigen style she kept it real, captioning the post, “when I was young, makeup was just for the face”. Teigen’s sentiments capture exactly how everyone outside the inner beauty circles feel: what even is body foundation?
Here, M.A.C senior artist Carol Mackie breaks down everything to know, including why you’d use it, how to apply it and which shade to select for flawless results.
“Think of body foundation like the perfect pair of sheer-to-invisible stockings for the whole body! Evening out skin tone, smoothing imperfections, and giving a natural tan or deeper colour to the skin. It’s a trick make-up artists use on models backstage all the time.”
“Fake tan can be difficult to apply, [it] isn’t really buildable once it’s on and can often be the wrong shade. It’s tricky to remove fake tan too – it can often appear streaky and patchy when it’s starting to wear off. Body foundation is simple to apply, streak-free, lightweight, moisturising and buildable in coverage. It’s a no-brainer really.”
“Apply moisturiser with [your] hands, [by] massaging [it] in, and [follow this by] do[ing] the same with your foundation! Distribute a small amount [of body foundation], say the size of a 10 cent piece between both hands and massage [it] in.”
“M.A.C’s Face and Body Foundation is water resistant so it won’t easily transfer and lasts up to eight-hours. If rubbed on clothing or sheets on the bed it may transfer slightly – just as a fake tan would. However adding a dusting of M.A.C’s Translucent Loose Powder will help to prevent this.”
“Think of the body the same way you would your face – if you have a soft, dewy natural look on the face this should carry on down the body. M.A.C’s Face and Body Foundation is the ultimate backstage product that we love to use on models for evening out skin tone on the legs and arms. For ultimate shimmer, add a touch of Strobe Body Lotion. Set and shimmer with a spray of Goldlite Fix + infused with pearlescent particles for the ultimate glow.”
“It is super easy to remove, you can use your usual shower gel or wash for the body and cleanser for the face. A water or oil based product will work.”
“You can definitely use a darker shade down the side of the legs and a much lighter one through the centre to slim the legs down. It’s a make-up artist trick to highlight with shine down the centre of the leg to elongate it. Think of it the same way you would contour the nose or face.”
“It really is super easy to apply, so there aren’t really many don’ts. If you are going to really deepen the skin tone several shades darker than your natural skin tone, make sure your body is smooth and hair-free on legs. Moisturise and massage in so the moisturiser isn’t sitting on the surface of the skin, then apply the foundation starting at the bottom of the legs and blend upwards.”
“Adding a touch of loose powder – it doesn’t need to be a body powder – will help to prevent transferring and make it even longer wearing.”
