Everything new coming to your favourite streaming platforms in August
The beginning of a new month signals the release of a series of shiny new TV shows and films across some of our favourite streaming platforms. From Foxtel, to Stan and Netflix, each platform floods its library with a sea of Oscar-winning movies, true crime documentaries and cult series you’re going to want to consume as quickly as possible. But don’t. Practice self control and pace yourself as you’ll have to wait an entire four weeks before you’re provided with another update.
In order to help you plan out what to watch and when, we’ve done the hard work for you and sifted through the numerous programs now available to stream for a comprehensive guide that lists which TV shows and movies we deem most worthy of your time. From Clint Eastwood’s award-winning drama, Million Dollar Baby, to Up in the Air, an underrated romantic comedy starring George Clooney and Vera Farmiga, scroll on for a list of everything we can promise you’re going to want to watch this August.
A Star Is Born (2018), Netflix
A Star Is Born is a film that was so popular it was re-released in North America months after it first premiered complete with 12 more minutes of footage, and it’s finally coming to Netflix. If for some reason you’re yet to watch this award-winning remake of the 1937 film of the same name, we advise that you do so this August – but be sure to have a tissue box handy.
Mother! (2017), Netflix
If you’re up for a psychological horror, then Mother! is most definitely the one for you. Watch as Jennifer Lawrence stars alongside Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer in the riveting film directed by Darren Aronofsky.
Otherhood (2019), Netflix
Patricia Arquette, Angela Bassett, and Felicity Huffman star (prior to the scandal that was Operation Varsity Blues, obviously) in the new Netflix Original comedy, Otherhood. In the film, three mothers head to New York City to surprise their sons on Mother’s Day. What could possibly go wrong?
Up in the Air (2009), Netflix
Although this film won a Golden Globe for Best Screenplay, and saw George Clooney nominated for an Academy Award for his lead role alongside Vera Farmiga, it remains a rather underrated romantic comedy that we recommend you watch this August.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), Stan
Another Academy Award-winning film, Mad Max: Fury Road, is coming to Stan this month. Described as one of the most successful Australian films of all time, this sci-fi fantasy is a must-watch and the perfect movie selection if your partner is refusing to sit through another romantic comedy with you.

Million Dollar Baby (2004), Stan
There is no denying that a good sob is a cathartic release, so if you’re in the mood to open the flood gates, then stream Clint Eastwood’s Oscar-winning Best Picture movie, Million Dollar Baby, which Hilary Swank took home a Best Actress Academy Award for, on Stan this August.
Silver Linings Playbook (2012), Stan
Silver Linings Playbook is a touching, stigma-challenging comedy with a rather heartwarming storyline starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. What more could you ask for on a cosy Friday night in?
The Handmaid’s Tale: season two (2017), Stan
As news that a fourth season of The Handmaid’s Tale makes headlines and we await the release of Margaret Atwood’s sequel to the original novel, be sure to rewatch the second season as it is now available to stream on Stan this August.
