Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti is keen to sign Sergio Romero from Man Utd to challenge Jordan Pickford, according to reports.

Pickford is currently Everton’s number one but he made a series of errors during the most recent campaign.

Ancelotti is thought to be unsure about Pickford’s reliability and is now targeting Romero, according to the Mirror.

Romero has been used as backup to David De Gea in recent seasons and tends to only play in cup ties.

The Argentinian’s place at Old Trafford has been threatened by the return of Dean Henderson, who wants to challenge De Gea for the number one shirt.

Henderson is being touted as a future England and Man Utd number one. His performances for Sheffield United while on loan have earned him an England call up.

That leaves Romero third in the pecking order. It’s believed he wants a route out of Manchester for first team opportunities, with Everton a potential destination.

Ancelotti is going through the process of rebuilding Everton’s squad and will see Romero as a perfect player to challenge Pickford.

If Pickford septs up his game whilst under pressure from Romero then the Toffees will have two reliable and quality goalkeepers.

However, if Pickford fails to cement his place in the team, he can be replaced by Romero as the number one shot-stopper.

The 33-year-old has plenty of experience, too. He’s played most of his football for AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands and for Sampdoria in Serie A.

He remains Argentina’s number one and has been capped 96 times by his country.

Romero could become Everton’s first major summer signing. The only player they’ve brought in so far is youngster Niels Nkounkou from Marseille.

The Toffees are currently in talks to sign James Rodriguez from Real Madrid and Allan from Napoli.

They’ve also enquired about Wales international Aaron Ramsey. The former Arsenal player has been told he’s not needed at Juventus.
